Smart City – What are they and How are they motivating change?

Throughout time, we have explored the benefits and drawbacks of many IoT-related solutions such as Autonomous Vehicles, Thermal cameras, self-isolation solutions. Today we are exploring the Smart City characteristics.

Smart City is one of the specific areas where IoT has specifically developed and grown within the 21st century. It is how many envision the solution to many of our problems and cutting any time/money costs. Companies and individuals do not want to spend resources repeating tasks that could be easily automated by IoT. Due to this popular idea the IoT industry has boomed in the lately says Harikrishna Kundariya (co-founder and director of eSparkBiz Technologies).

By 2050 68% of the world’s population will live in urban locations, making the need for innovation and efficiency the priority, thus the need and necessity for IoT to develop to ease these future prospects. With the help of IoT, the living conditions would be more favourable by efficient handling of the excess population.

A significant aspect of the Smart Cities would be the security, with higher monitoring, there would be higher security regardless where you reside. An example of this would be the use of CCTV, however with further IoT developments CCTV cameras can be integrated with facial recognition, fire and smoke alarm capabilities. This would bring many advantages and trust in security for all the citizens.

It has been widely recognised that water scarcity is a real issue, especially with climate change as one of the big issues in today’s environment. Currently, some of the water loss can be due to leakage, energy consumption and overuse of water. Smart Cities can help the issue by offering more efficient methods of using water decreasing water usage and slowing the ‘water shortage’ problem.

Transportation can be impacted by smart cities as well; it can reduce inefficient transportation, excess traffic and over-dependence on personal vehicles. There is definitely a need to optimise travel by using smart technology and offering individuals alternative travel options.

Overall Smart cities bring many advantages including and these includes reduced environmental footprint; efficient data-driven decision making. It has been a very enormous technology outbreak in the last few years and with the positive outcomes it brings with the current turmoil’s in today’s society; it can directly and indirectly aid all problems.
